Breast Augmentation

Many women choose to enhance their overall figure by enlarging their breasts. During this procedure, which lasts between one and two hours, implants are inserted beneath the breasts to create a larger bust and more pleasing shape. The implants are filled with either saline (salt water) or silicone, and the recovery period is typically one week.

A thorough discussion between you and your surgeon before surgery will allow you to choose the best type of implant for your shape, the method of placement, and the final postoperative size.

Facelift

As we age, the architecture of the face changes. Not only do wrinkles develop, but the entire structure of the face becomes altered. During a facelift, excess skin is removed and the muscles and supporting structures of the face are placed back into their more youthful position. Most patients look ten to twenty years younger, and lose the tired or angry facial appearance that sometimes accompanies aging.

Often a facelift is combined with another procedure such as browlift (elevation of the eyebrows to their correct position), blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) and necklift. The procedure is done in our own office, and most patients take about one week to recover. Preoperative discussion between you and your surgeon will help clarify whether you are a candidate for facelift and what other procedures may add to the final result.

Blepharoplasty (Eyelid surgery)

Most men and women, as they age, develop excess skin of the upper eyelids and, sometimes, the lower eyelids. "Bags under the eyes" create a tired look and can make one look older than his or her true age. During a blepharoplasty, excess skin is removed from the eyelids along with excess fat. Sometimes the fat is moved to "hollow" areas in an attempt to fill in specific areas around the eyes.

Your surgeon can discuss with you whether you need upper, lower, or both eyelids treated. Most patients will have some swelling for several days, but after a week the eyes appear brighter and more youthful.

Liposuction

Liposuction is a popular method of body sculpting that is safe and very effective in trained hands. During the procedure, a narrow cannula, or blunt tube, is inserted beneath the skin through very small incisions. Excess fat can be removed from the abdomen, hips, thighs and knees. Our surgeons use the tumescent technique in which a solution of anesthetic and saline is first injected beneath the skin into the fatty layer. This technique minimizes pain and blood loss, while at the same time producing a more desirable and natural result.

Most patients can return to their normal lifestyle after one week. All patients are instructed to wear a tight-fitting, specialized garment for three to six weeks to help minimize swelling and unevenness. Before surgery you and your surgeon will discuss exactly what areas of the body are to be treated.

Abdominoplasty (Tummy tuck)

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is the removal of excess skin from the lower belly with tightening of the abdominal muscles. Many women find that after pregnancy their abdominal musculature has been disrupted and no amount of exercise will lead to a more youthful, flat abdomen.

Some women with a mild lower abdominal bulge are candidates for a mini-abdominoplasty, while others require more extensive surgery on their stomach muscles. The procedure takes between two and three hours, and most women can return to an active lifestyle after two weeks of recovery. Sometimes liposuction is used along with an abdominoplasty to achieve an optimum result.

Rhinoplasty (Nasal surgery)

Alteration of the nasal shape can make many patients feel better about their overall appearance and lead to greater self-confidence. Nasal surgery allows the surgeon to make either small changes in the nasal architecture or large changes, depending on the desires of the patient. During the consultation, you and your surgeon will discuss exactly what changes you desire.

Some patients require straightening of the nasal septum or reduction of the interior architecture to allow better flow of air during breathing. Others want a thinner, more angular nose that is more proportional to the rest of the face. Most patients have some swelling for about a week, but can then return to a normal lifestyle.

Mastopexy (Breast lift)

Many women, especially those who nursed after pregnancy, develop ptosis (sagging) of the breasts. Aging causes the breasts to lose volume in the upper pole and the nipples to point downward. Mastopexy is an operation that lifts the entire breast so that the nipples are at the correct position in relation to the rest of the breast. The surgery also reestablishes a more youthful profile to the breast.

The surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, and most patients can return to work and a relatively normal lifestyle in about one week.

Laser surgery for "spider veins"

Small red veins on the face or legs that appear during aging are called "spider veins." These veins typically appear around the nose and on the cheeks and chin, as well as on the legs. Our Coherent Versa-Pulse laser destroys these veins while leaving the skin intact. No anesthesia is needed for the procedure, which usually takes only ten to twenty minutes. Patients can immediately return to their normal lifestyle.

Although several treatments may be needed, most patients have dramatic results from just one or two.

Laser surgery for wrinkles

Because of sun exposure and the natural aging process, most patients develop wrinkles around the eyes, nose and mouth as they grow older. Our Coherent UltraPulse carbon dioxide laser removes the superficial layers of the skin to diminish wrinkles and smooth the facial skin. Most patients experience a tightening of the skin that accomplishes a "mini" facelift.

Some patients desire laser skin rejuvenation of the entire face, while others request specific areas (e.g., around the mouth of a smoker who has fine "lipstick" lines). The procedure can be done under either local or general anesthesia, and patients can typically return to an active lifestyle in one week. During the healing process, make-up is used to camouflage the color of the skin and allow patients to return to work quicker.

Sclerotherapy for "spider veins"

Small red veins on the leg that appear in later years are often caused by long periods of standing. Veins that are too large for laser treatment can often be removed by small injections of a chemical (sclerotherapy) that causes the vein to disappear. These injections are performed with a tiny needle that causes minimal pain.

The legs are sometimes wrapped for twenty-four hours and elevated. Patients can then return to a normal lifestyle. Two or three treatments may be required, and many patients benefit from the combination of laser therapy and sclerotherapy.

Using a state-of-the-art laser that is targeted directly at the hair follicle and a cooling tip to minimize discomfort, the CoolGlide™ literally slides over the skin and injures the active follicles so that hair growth is diminished with each treatment. Legs, underarms, the “bikini area,” and the upper lip and chin can all be treated in our office without anesthesia in most cases. Treatment areas for men include the back, the neck and other areas of unwanted hair growth. The results are immediate and long-lasting.

Most areas will require several treatments that are spaced about one month apart. Following each treatment there will be some redness that will fade after several hours.
